A group of 15 international supermarket chains and buyers have lauded Thailand's efforts to reform its fishing industry, citing "important regulations that protect the marine environment and workers from exploitation".

"These efforts have improved Thailand's international status, especially with the European Union and the United States governments," the group of buyers including Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose wrote in an open letter.

"As a current or potential international buyer of seafood products from Thailand, we continue to monitor and support collaboration between the government, seafood suppliers and civil society organisations to ensure that these crucial reforms continue, progress and be implemented effectively," they said.

The other signatories included the Albertsons, Aldi, Lidl, Edeka, Kroger and Morrisons supermarket chains, as well as the Seafood Ethics Action Alliance.
